“Be Aware of Self in Leisure”
In one of my blog, I was a leisure educator by identifying my friend Jennifer’s preference on sports. She likes to watch sports games rather than playing, and in the past she really enjoyed to watch her brother’s hockey games and her sister’s ringuette games. However, after she had a child, she had not time to watch any sports games. As leisure educator, I identified her constraints and her past participations in hockey games. I created an opportunity for her to participate in a hockey game by inviting her to watch a hockey game in Loyola arena and offering a free ticket. The free ticket motivated her to come to the game by not worrying her financial. Furthermore, I noticed that she had a lot of stress for both school and family’s duty, I helped her to improve her life quality by creating an opportunity for her experiencing leisure and helping her to create a time for her to take a break from family and school. Thus, it allows her to have leisure and enjoying her leisure by watching a hockey game that allowed her to leave her mind from her daily work and enjoying her time outside of home.
“Appreciate Leisure”
Through out my blogs, I always managed to find leisure by eating, going grocery store, spending time with my teammate and writing poems. I understand leisure benefits for physical and mental, for example, writing a poem allowed me to express my stress and negative emotions thus it allowed me to feel better emotionally. As leisure educator, I transfer this knowledge by building options for leisure for those who have trouble understand and appreciate leisure. I have a friend called Katie, she is currently studied in pharmacy in University of Montreal. During the week and weekend, she rarely had a time for leisure and when she was not doing her school works, she did not know what to do. As a leisure educator, I educated her to appreciate leisure by suggesting several possibilities for her to experience leisure. First, I identified her preferences for leisure, she likes to read, hang around with friends and watch sports games especially football games. During this weekend, I called her and suggested several choices of leisure; watch a hockey game in Loyola Arena, spend time in her house and make pizzas together, going out for a movie or drink a coffee in Tim Horton. At first time, we chose to spend time in her house and make pizzas together on Friday, but she cannot do it anymore because she was very busy on Friday with her classes and works. Even though I could not go to her house, I asked if she wanted to go my hockey game on Saturday’s night. Since she enjoyed watching sports game, we replaced making pizzas at her home by a hockey game. Rather she spend entire weekend at home and not knowing what to do, I opened up another option for her to enjoy leisure. From this experience, I taught her to discover different options for her to choose based on her preferences, and taught her to be flexible with leisure by aware several options for leisure.
"Acquire Recreation Activity Skills”
Last year, at Christmas, I invited my friend Katie to skating rink at Bonaventure. I know that the reason that she does more passive leisure than active leisure because she is not very athletic and she does not have any one to teach her skills that require for her to experience skating. Katie told me that she would like to learn how to skate and she really likes to skate but she cannot do it because lack of skill and she scares to get hurt by skating alone. So on last year Christmas, I managed to get a time to teach her how to skate. First, I noticed that she is beginner and she was feeling scared to get on the ice. Thus, I hold her hands to make her feel comfortable as we stepped on to the ice. Then, I taught her the basic of skating by showing to her the “L” shape for beginner’s skaters and asked her to imitate me. After I allowed her to practice and holding on my hands. Once she mastered this technique and I noticed her fear reduced, I started to increase the speed. At beginning she felt the speed was a challenge, then once she matched her skill with the challenge; she was no longer scared, she enjoyed without holding on my hands anymore. My friend really enjoyed her time in the skating rink and after that day, she asked me if we can next month and I said yes.
